Fitment Guide: Offset
Fitment Guide: Offset
Searching for the perfect aftermarket wheels for your vehicle? One of the things you’ll want to take into consideration before you buy a new pair of wheels is offset.
What is wheel offset?
Offset is defined as the distance from the hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The wheel offset is measured in millimeters and is either positive, negative or zero offset.
Positive Offset
The hub mounting surface is toward the front- or wheel side- of the wheel
Negative Offset
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheel’s centerline
Zero Offset
The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.
Why does offset matter?
Offset varies from one wheel to another. And your choice of wheel offset will depend on what best fits your vehicle without negatively impacting handling and performance, as well as what look you’re going for. It’s important to be mindful of suspension parts and the potential for rubbing. Customers who are lifting or leveling their truck may want to choose a wheel with an offset that gives them the most “aggressive stance.” To compare, a wheel with a -24 offset will appear to sit closer to the vehicle’s wheel well. A wheel with a -44 offset will pull the wheel and tire further away from the vehicle’s center, making for an arguably more aggressive look.
This 2019 Chevrolet 1500 has 22X12 Fuel Contra wheels with a -44 offset.
This 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD LTZ has 20X10 Moto Metal 962 wheels with a -24 Offset
Backspacing
Backspacing may be confused with offset, and though they are similar concepts, they aren’t quite the same. Backspace is the distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the mounting face.
