What’s the Difference between The GMC Sierra AT4 and AT4X?

March 2, 2026

What sets the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 apart from the AT4X? Learn more about the key differences between these two trims – including suspension and off-road performance, interior features, tech, and overall value.

PRICE and engine

While the AT4 has a starting price of $68,000, the AT4X takes a significant jump in price, starting at $81,000. The engine is typically one of the largest influences on vehicle price, but the AT4 and AT4X offer the same engine options. Both vehicles come equipped with a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine, with 305 Horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. An upgrade to a 6.2L V8 engine is available, giving your truck 420 Horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Wheel and Tire Packages

The AT4 gives a refined style to its wheels and tires, with the ability to choose between 18-20 inch wheels. Tires on the AT4 are designed for all-terrain use but are slightly more luxurious in appearance. The AT4X takes on a much more rugged look, with wheels and tires that were designed with off-roading in mind.

Suspension

Both the AT4 and AT4X come standard with a two-inch factory lift. However, there are some differences between the lift quality on each vehicle. The AT4 comes with a light duty off-road suspension and Rancho monotube shocks.

The AT4X contains Multimatic DSSV shocks and dampeners. These DSSVs (Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve) contain three chambers: Two designed to work against your terrain and another that separates your vehicle’s hydraulic fluid from its nitrogen charge. These upgrades allow for the AT4X to perform in dynamic off-road situations while moving at higher speeds.

Exterior and Tailgate

The AT4X comes standard with an AEV heavy-duty bumper, with the option to upgrade to a full AEV-edition vehicle. This is not an available option on the AT4. With the AEV bumper, your GMC will have a slightly wider stance and is better suited for a variety of off-road terrains.

Both the AT4 and the AT4X come standard with GMC’s Multi-Functional tailgate. The AT4X tailgate comes with several minor upgrades to the tailgate, including a Kicker audio system and and a hitch-view angle available on the backup camera.

Interior

The interiors of these two vehicles are mostly similar, with identical 13.4-inch displays and leather seats. Both vehicles come with CarPlay, Wi-Fi accessibility, pedestrian alerts and adaptive cruise control.

The AT4X will bring some extra additions to your interior, including a heads-up display, upgraded leather seats, and a digital rear-view display. The interior also includes suede headliner, a power sunroof and Bose surround sound speakers.
