The Three Most Popular Truck Builds Explained (Level, 4″, or 6″)

Trying to decide between a leveling kit, a 3-4″ lift, or a full 6″ lift? This guide breaks down the three most popular truck build packages we do every day. Find out what each setup looks like and how it would fit your vehicle!

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 6″ Rough Country Lift.

Leveling Kits (One to three inches)

A majority of factory or stock trucks are manufactured with towing in mind. To accommodate for the possibility of extra weight being towed, the rear end of the truck is raised slightly higher than the front. Leveling kits are installed to match the vehicle’s front height to the factory raised rear height. While leveling kits do not often require any re-alignment, It’s recommended to align your vehicle following any changes to the suspension. Adding a leveling kit to your vehicle usually involves changing the components of the struts, with larger models such as 2500s and 3500s requiring additional altering of the upper control arms or E-bolt components.

The standard fitment for a levelled vehicle allows for tires up to 33″. These are commonly paired with 20×9 wheels for a stance that is flush with the fenders, with an offset of either +0 or +18. Stock wheels can also be retained with a leveling kit if spacers are installed.

Mid-Level Lifts (Three and a half to Four inches)

A mid-sized lift ensures a smooth ride while also giving your vehicle a more lifted appearance. When installing a mid-level lift, cutting and replacing of the vehicle’s crossmembers is required. This process cannot be reversed, meaning that once a mid-level lift is installed, you are unable to switch back to a smaller lift or leveling kit.

On a mid-level lift, your ideal fitment is 20×10 wheels with tire sizes ranging from 33″ to 35″. Larger tires such as 35s will require some trimming to the vehicle in order to prevent rubbing. Offset on these builds ranges from 0 to -18, resulting in a stance of up to two inches out from the fenders on certain models.

Aggressive Setups (Five to Six Inches)

The Six-inch kit is by far the most commonly installed lift on Krietz Customs builds. Six-inch lifts result in a significant change to both your vehicle’s ride and appearance and allow for a variety of wheel-and tire size options. On a properly installed Six-inch lift, you’ll feel the road a bit more but the quality of your ride won’t be compromised. While these lifts do fit most wheel-and tire combinations, some trimming to the vehicle’s fender liner is required.

Our suggested fitment for a lift of this size is 22×12 wheels with 35″ tires. On some larger models, there is enough space for 37″ tires. 20×10 wheels are also an ideal fit.

What’s the best lift kit for my vehicle?

Leveling Kits are great for taking your daily driver to the next level. They offer a comfortable ride alongside a slightly elevated appearance, without making too many drastic changes to the anatomy of your vehicle.

The Mid-Level Lift gives your vehicle that lifted appearance and offers some more versatility in terms of your wheel-and-tire size options. These lifts are slightly more costly than a leveling kit but include extra elevation for trail riding and other off-road activities.

Six-inch Lifts transform your vehicle into a show-ready truck while still preserving the quality of your highway ride. It’s an aggressive look that stands out on the road and allows for the largest variety of wheel-and-tire combinations for your vehicle.
