Learn more about the differences between Toyota’s full-size Sequoia and the legendary 4Runner. This guide compares factors such as size, interior space, off-roading, and more!
Key Differences
There is a significant price difference between the Sequoia and 4Runner, with several factors contributing to the gap.
The 4Runner starts at around $41,000 and runs on the same frame and drivetrain as the Tacoma, Toyota’s mid-size pickup truck. MSRP on the Sequoia starts around $64,000. It’s a larger vehicle than the 4Runner, and uses the same drivetrain and frame as the full-size Toyota Tundra.
Due to its larger frame and increased power, the Sequoia has a much stronger towing capacity than the 4Runner, with a maximum of 9,000 pounds compared to the 4Runner’s 5,500. The Sequoia also comes standard with third row seating, fitting up to eight people. Additional seating in the 4Runner is only available via upgrade, fitting seven with the added third row.
There is more legroom and cargo space inside the Sequoia, with 120 cubic feet of space compared to the 4Runner’s 90 cubic feet.

Interior and additional features
The 4Runner has an off-road focused design, while the Sequoia is suited for comfort and family use.
The Sequoia contains a high-quality 14-inch infotainment system, moonroof, a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, and the option to add a heads-up display. 360 degree cameras and trailer backup assistance are additional upgrades featured in the Sequoia that aren’t available in the 4Runner. To assist in towing, the Sequoia also features adjustable tow mirrors and rear air suspension. These airbags are designed to raise and lower the vehicle, accommodating for a variety of trailer sizes and payloads.
The 4Runner has a much more compact interior than the Sequoia. It’s equipped with a rock-crawling feature and specialized off-road cameras, and the same infotainment center and gauge cluster as the Sequoia. The 4Runner’s rear window can also be fully lowered. Other features include additional grab bars inside the vehicle, a removeable JBL speaker, and additional drive modes for off-roading.
