Ford F-350 v. GMC 3500

May 19, 2026

Compare the differences between two heavy-duty icons: the Ford F-350 and GMC’s Sierra 3500. This guide breaks down torque, power, towing capacity, and more!

Engines, Towing, and Power

The Ford F-350 has six trim levels, with two available engine options. The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel is offered with a standard or high-output option. A 7.3L V8 gas engine is available on higher trim levels such as the King Ranch and Platinum.

The F-350 falls slightly short of the 3500 in terms of towing capacity, with a maximum of 20-25,000lbs. The F-450 is a closer equivalent to the 3500, with a maximum capacity of 30,000lbs and a gooseneck capacity of 40,000lbs.

Although it falls short in towing capacity, the F-350 has more horsepower and pound-feet of torque, with 500 HP and 1,200 lb-ft of power.

The GMC Sierra 3500 has only five trim levels, with two similar engine options to its Ford counterpart: A 6.6L Duramax diesel engine and a 6.6L V8 gas engine.

No matter what tow package you choose, the Sierra 3500 consistently reaches 30,000lbs of towing capacity. With the diesel V8 engine and dual rear wheels, your maximum capacity can reach up to 36,000lbs.

The 3500 has a horsepower of 425 and a torque of 975 lb-ft. While it has superior towing power compared to the F-350, the 3500’s Duramax engine lacks the reputation of reliability that Ford’s Power Stroke engines have gained. Both are still regarded as durable options, able to reach 250,000-450,000 miles with proper maintenance.
